Nabendynamo SONDELUX
  standard disc
The SONDELUX front hub is the smallest and lightest hub dynamo, and has a next-to-zero drag compared to any other dynamo on the market. Made in Germany by Wilfried Schmidt Maschinenbau, the SON 20 R hub is quiet and reliable, it's barely bigger than a standard wheel front hub and has been proven maintenance-free for over 50,000 kilometers. Available in polished Silver aluminum or Black / Red anodized aluminum, it is in stock in 32 and 36 hole version; upon request in 20, 24 and 28 hole version, and for disc brakes in 32 hole version.
5 year warranty. Weight: 390 g. Buy
The SONDELUX hub dynamo is suitable for powering a variety of front and rear lights, among which the halogen E6 and the LED Edelux by Schmidt, and the LED Lumotec IQ made by Busch & Müller. Recently another German firm, Supernova, has introduced a series of very bright dynamo-powered front and rear LED lights: the E3 PRO and E3 Triple series. Here's a comparison of their headlight beams:

The SON dynamo is the ideal choice for randonneurs who pedal through the night in any weather condition, if nothing else because it eliminates the need for batteries and it provides light whenever needed with the simple turn of a switch. It's also an excellent choice for year-round commuters and for cycloturists who at the end of the day may still be far from their destination.
Highlights:
- No more batteries! Lights are on as the wheel turns.
- It works in any weather, does not fear cold, snow or rain unlike any other battery-powered light (it's a known fact that batteries discharge faster in the cold).
- It eliminates the need to carry replacement batteries. The fewer batteries get discarded, the better it is for the environment. The SON dynamo is earth-friendly!
- Significant less drag than any other dynamo system on the market, thanks to high-quality bearings that provide a smooth and quiet ride.
- Much lighter than any other dynamo, it is also completely waterproof.
Schmidt Edelux
Schmidt also makes the Edelux LED light, available in polished Silver aluminum and Black / Red anodized aluminum and suitable for any type of bike. Rated at 80 lux, it is three times brighter than the brightest halogen light (E6). At a speed of 30 km/h it produces a uniform and wide light field (double compared to the E6).
This LED light is mounted on a large internal copper heat sink which ensures low operating temperatures, and therefore a high light output - the highest in the industry as of today. It has an On/Off switch and a Senso position, which switches the light on and off automatically according to ambient conditions (very useful, for example, for riding through tunnels and at dusk). The coax cable is built into the sturdy housing, which makes it tear-proof. When you stop, the light remains on for up to 4 minutes.
You can hardwire a rear light to the Edelux, which will turn on and off at the same time. The front light output is not affected by the presence of a rear light.
5 year warranty. Weight: 85 g.

Busch & Müller Lumotec IQ Fly Senso Plus
 |
The LED Lumotec IQ Fly Senso Plus is a LED light made by Busch & Müller and it is an excellent alternative to the Edelux, if nothing else because it costs about half the price. The LED is very bright (40 lux) and the light is reflected backwards on a reflector which in turns forwards it to the road. This allows the rider to focus the light on the road surface precisely where he/she might see fit. The light beam is concentrated, it is brighter on the top and the side edges and become progressively dimmer towards the bottom.
The Senso Plus model has a Senso position. In this case as well, you can hardwire a rear light to the Lumotec, which will turn on and off at the same time. A hardwired rear light reduces the heat produced by the front LED, ultimately increasing its life. The front light output is not affected by the presence of a rear light. The Lumotec light has a plastic housing. 2 year warranty. Weight: 100 g. |
Supernova E3 PRO / E3 Triple

 |
Supernova makes some of the most advanced and reliable lights battery-powered in the industry, and has recently introduced the first series of dynamo-compatible lights. The E3 PRO model, in 7 colors, has 1 LED mounted on an asymmetrical lens. It comes with a multimount bracket or in a version with an extra threaded hole for "lefty-mount".
The E3 Triple model, always in 7 colors, has 3 internal LEDs and its output is so bright that the manufacturer itself strongly cautions against using it for riding in the city or in residential areas. It comes with either a multimount or a handlebar bracket in two diameters: 25,4/26 mm and 31,6 mm. You can wire two E3 lights in a series, they need not be of the same type. The E3 rear light comes in a configuration for rack mounting or saddle post, it weighs 20 - 30 g and, if wired together with the front light, it will turn on and off at the same time. The Supernova lights are all enclosed in a sturdy aluminum housing for better heat dissipation from the LEDs. This ensures a longer bulb life and a constant light output. 2 year warranty. Weight: 130 g. |
